Anthropic hired Tom Turvey, the former Google executive in charge of Google Books, to begin buying physical copies of books in bulk, tearing off the bindings with a “hydraulic-powered cutting machine” and scanning each page to feed into its AI model. The pages were then taken away by a recycling company."
